Hi folks got a big prob for you. Pulled out of the drive into second gear "fine" went to change into third bang gearstick went floppy.Checked cables there fine,.Its stuck in second gear so managed to drive round the block home. The selector on top of the gearbox moves back and forward when the stick is moved so i suspect the selector mechanism in the box has sheared. Is this a big job or better to get another box? any idea how much? Many thanks in advance

Aren't there are 3 or 4 cables? Would be surprised if the gearbox is faulty.

Yeah, checked cables- gearstick moves selector so i reckon selector has broke in gearbox.Been quoted 700 for gearbox and clutch fitted by Mr Clutch,is this good?

...listen to VR6Galaxy, Mr. Clutch is a desparate and useless place. Don't go there!

Are you absolutely certain that the cables and linkage are operating correctly? You really need to get your hand on the mechanism (awkward) and try shifting it up and down and round about, and get someone to sit in the car and watch the lever as you do it, you should be able to hear the selectors attempting to shift with positive clunking sounds.

you would be better off trying a local gearbox specialists, the gearbox used in the Galaxy is a commonly used one that they may have on their shelves? they may even know what has gone in yours and know a cheap fix! time to hit the yellow pages and list a few numbers ready for monday morning :(

On the early Gals the gearbox selector shaft was secured to the actual selector arms by a 7mm metric fine bolt which had a tendency to shear off allowing the selector shaft to have a full range of movement but did not select the gears, I without full knowledge of the consequences of leaving a bolt head in the gearbox just removed the selector shaft and housing and replaced the bolt.

I would not ocndone this as the missing head from the bolt will be in the gearbox but having said that the Gal did at least another 130k miles and still is being used by my sister on a daily basis.

Its a tight and fiddly job under the battery shelf and dropping the engine mount would make it easier.

Neil Wiles-- Thanks for that m8 i think you have nailed it. When i drove it back in second gear i heard a sound from the box like something rubbing on gear teeth ( i bet its the bolt head). Will try to remove selector tomorrow (sun) and see if thats the cause, then work out how to retrieve the head.Post result tomorrow nite.Cheers. :(

Found problem.Selector bolt has disappeared into the depths of the gearbox, the whole bolt has come out.anyone have any ideas on how to get it out without removing the box from the car? Cheapest quote to remove and refit box is

How about removing drain plug, it may be magnetic, it may come out with the oil, or use a bit of bent stiff wire to search for it. With luck the bolt will be in the bottom of the box.

Magnet on a stick? wet and dry hoover? turn the car upside down and rattle it till it drops out? remove the drain plug and see if you can flush it out? if its already in the bottom of the box you could be lucky and it could just stay there and do no more damage? but is it a risk you'd want to take? :(

Ive drained the oil no sign of it near the plug hole. im not going to risk the gearbox by leaving it in there. im going to get on of those long flexible retriever tools with a magnet on the end and fish round through the selector hole hopefully i will find it by chance. :(

You could try using a metal coat hanger, run a magnet around it to magnatise it (an old speaker would do the job)then put the magnet on the end you are holding and put the other end into the hole,it should pick up any loose metal in the box.

VW show the selector unit available as a complete unit, although they do list the parts seperately! take a trip into you local dealers and ask to look at the parts listing screens for the gearbox screen SHA 9 311 311-82

He's only jealous as he has replaced most parts on his old nail apart from the gearbox :D he's looking at replacing the engine but isn't sure if the one he's stuck a deposit down on is the right one? as his a 16V :( where as the one he's going for is only a 12V :) or even a 24V :D
